Job Description

Provide high quality, continuous and comprehensive nutrition services based on progressive knowledge to create and support an intercollegiate culture where athletes, coaches and staff recognize nutrition as a critical element in academic and athletic performance. Evaluate nutrition status and needs of individual student-athletes and athletic teams to develop, implement and evaluate appropriate nutrition education, dietary plans in order to enhance athletic performance and general well-being. Coordinate consistent nutritional programing amongst all areas of athletics department (including athletic trainers, team physicians, strength coaches, sport coaches and other student services staff).

The university fields 17 varsity teams (6 men's teams and 11 women's teams), 14 of which compete in the Southeastern Conference.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Services for Student-Athletes

1. Manage all aspects of performance nutrition for assigned athletic teams

2. Develop effective eating strategies to enhance athletic performance including before, during, and after activity.

3. Weight maintenance programs in-season and off-season.

4. Educate on skills for meal planning, grocery shopping and meal preparation.

5. Provide individual and team nutrition education and counseling to enhance the performance of the student athlete year-round.

6. Coordinate nutrition plans aimed at maximizing performance based on specific dietary goals utilizing campus sponsored meal plans.

7. In conjunction with other wellness team members, educate and help manage/treat student-athletes with food allergies or medical conditions relating to nutrition.

General Department

8. Develop nutritional strategies essential to maximizing performance including enhancing and monitoring current nutrition resources and support, developing, and implementing policies and protocols that ensure compliance with NCAA and SEC rules and regulations.

9. Coordinate with Hendrix Registered Dietitian to ensure meals provided fit dietary guidelines.

10. Manage composition of the various nutrition stations and dietary supplements for assigned teams.

11. Provide consultation for meals/nutritional needs for teams that will be traveling.

12. Address a wide range of health issues including eating disorders, weight management, gastrointestinal complications, and diabetes.

13. Collaborate with administrative, coaching, and support staff to enhance performance and well-being of student athletes.

14. Collaborate and develop education materials for all athletes including social media efforts.

15. Other duties as assigned by the Director of Sport Nutrition.

 

Supervisory Relationships

This position does not have direct supervisory responsibility and reports administratively and functionally to the Associate Athletic Director for Performance and Student Athlete Well-Being and is part of the department’s Sport Performance team.

 

Qualifications

· A Bachelor’s degree is required.

· A Master’s Degree is preferred.

· Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist; CSSD (Board Certified Sports Dietician);TN state licensure as a Registered Dietician/Nutritionist (if out of state then expected to initiate process once hired) is required.

· Additional accredited Sports Nutrition certification and/or course work in sports nutrition, working with the collegiate/elite athlete, etc. is preferred.

Experience and Skills

· A minimum of 2-3 years in the Sports Nutrition field and experience working with collegiate/elite athletes is necessary.

· 5+ years of experience working with collegiate/elite athletes is preferred.
