Assistant Sports Dietitian – Position Overview

 

Under the direction of the Director of Football Sports Nutrition, the Assistant Football Sports Dietitian supports the execution of daily nutrition operations for Auburn University’s football program.

This position contributes to the delivery of comprehensive nutrition services that help football student-athletes optimize their athletic performance, academic success, and personal development. The Assistant Football Sports Dietitian supports the mission and goals of the Auburn Athletic Department and collaborates as an integral member of an interdisciplinary sports performance team, ensuring student-athletes have the resources necessary to achieve and sustain competitive excellence.




Primary Responsibilities:

•    Assist in all nutrition related support provided to football student-athletes.

•    Support management of fueling station operations, including scheduling, procurement, ordering, receiving, and inventory control.

•    Help train, manage, and mentor student interns on departmental policies, procedures, and expectations.

•    Serve as a nutrition resource for athletes, coaches, sports performance staff, athletic trainers, food service personnel, and others as needed.

•    Provide individualized nutrition counseling related to training, competition, recovery, injury, illness, weight management, hydration, and travel.

•    Assess and analyze dietary practices, body composition, and energy balance of student athletes in the context of athletic performance and overall health.

•    Educate student-athletes on food selection (e.g., grocery store tours, food storage, use of per diem/Red Card) and food preparation (cooking classes).

•    Monitor hydration status and design individualized hydration protocols based on sweat rate and cramping risk.

•    Collaborate with coaches, strength and conditioning staff, sports medicine personnel, and other student-athlete service providers to ensure a comprehensive approach to training, nutrition, and recovery.

•    Support the treatment of nutrition-related medical issues through coordinated care and guidance.

•    Attend team workouts, practices and games to provide education, care and fueling support for optimal performance.

•    Educate student-athletes and staff on the appropriate and legal use of dietary supplements in accordance with NCAA regulations and nutrition related bylaws.

•    Assist in developing and implementing menus, emphasizing nutrient-dense foods to optimize athlete health and performance.

•    Collaborate with Training Table staff on individualized athlete needs, including allergies and specialized diets.

•    Attend team meals and actively coach student-athletes to support informed and performance-driven food choices.

•    Support the creation of a curriculum for culinary performance methods and techniques, including cooking classes and demonstrations.

•    Build relationships with local businesses to expand the reach and impact of the Sports Nutrition Department.

•    Stay current on research, trends, and best practices in sports nutrition.

•    Contribute to advancing the Auburn University Football Sports Nutrition Department, promoting high-performance fueling standards.

•    Perform other duties as assigned to support the Sports Nutrition                  Department.




Minimum Requirements:

 

•    Registered Dietitian; Auburn state licensure upon hire.

•    Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition/Dietetics or related field.

•    Experience working as a sports dietitian in collegiate athletics or a comparable setting, directly supporting elite athletes.

•    Demonstrate knowledge and application of Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT).

•    Exhibit competence in helping manage eating disorders and disordered eating cases.

•    Willingness to work non-traditional hours, including early mornings, late nights, weekends, and holidays.

•    Strong oral and written communication skills, including presentation and nutrition counseling abilities.

•    Exceptional interpersonal, organizational, time management, prioritization skills.

•    Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

•    Creative thinker with strong problem-solving skills and an innovative approach.

•    Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team.

•    Takes initiative and completes tasks with minimal supervision.

•    Demonstrates punctuality, enthusiasm, and strong self-motivation.

•    Maintain dietetic registration and fulfill continuing education requirements.

•    Knowledge of and compliant with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

•    Adherence to University, Southeastern Conference, and NCAA rules and regulations




Preferred Qualifications:

 

•    Education: Master's Degree in dietetics, exercise physiology, kinesiology, sports nutrition, or related area.

•    Experience: Two or more years of experience working as a sports dietitian in collegiate athletics or a comparable setting, directly supporting elite athletes.

•    Licensure: CSSD or actively working toward credential.

Compensation: Salary of up to $60,000 commensurate with experience and qualifications.
